How the calculation works

The standard method reduces the month, day, and year separately, then combines them. Master numbers 11, 22, and 33 are never reduced further.

  1. Reduce the month of birth to a single digit (keep 11 and 22 as master numbers).
    Example: November → 11 (kept).
  2. Reduce the day of birth the same way.
    Example: 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 (kept).
  3. Reduce the full year by adding all four digits, then reducing.
    Example: 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1.
  4. Add the three results together and reduce once more — keeping 11, 22, and 33.
    Example: 11 + 11 + 1 = 23 → 2 + 3 = 5. Life path number 5.

Master numbers: if your final total is 11, 22, or 33, it is kept as-is — traditionally read as a heightened form of 2, 4, or 6. The calculator shows e.g. “22 (Master Number, reduces to 4)” and points you to the corresponding number page.

Frequently asked questions

How is a life path number calculated?

Add up all the digits of your birth date (month + day + full year), then keep reducing the total to a single digit — unless you land on 11, 22, or 33, which are kept as master numbers. For example, someone born on July 20, 1990: month 7, day 2+0=2, year 1+9+9+0=19 → 1+9=10 → 1. Total: 7+2+1=10 → 1. Their life path number is 1. The calculator above shows every step for your own date.

What are master numbers 11, 22, and 33?

In numerology, 11, 22, and 33 are called master numbers and are traditionally not reduced to a single digit. They are read as heightened versions of 2, 4, and 6 respectively — carrying the base number's themes with extra intensity and responsibility. If your result is a master number, this calculator shows it as, for example, “22 (Master Number, reduces to 4)” and links you to the page for 4.

Can my life path number change over time?

No — your life path number is derived from your birth date, which doesn't change, so the number stays the same for life. What changes is your relationship to it: most numerology writing describes the number as a lifelong curriculum, with its lessons deepening as you get older.

Is the life path number the same as the destiny (expression) number?

No. The life path number comes from your birth date and describes your life's broader themes and lessons. The destiny or expression number comes from the letters of your full birth name and is said to describe your talents and direction. They are two different calculations in traditional numerology.
